Monkstown Boxing Club's 25 boxers (aged from 9 to 17) returned on the last flight out of London on Sunday night 22nd January 2017. The boxers completed a team building & training camp for up coming Dublin and All Ireland Championships.

On Friday 20th Jan - the boxers arrived in London at 10am and did a light running session around their base in Stratford London. At 3pm they headed to Bethnal Green to visit the famous Repton BC Club. Long been regarded as the best club in England - churning out champion after champion year on year. They successfully re-wrote their own record in 2015 by coaching 13 English Schoolboy Champions. Monkstown BC arrived there at 4pm and after six hours of really competitive training/sparring, the Monkstown boys headed for home.

On Saturday 21st Jan - the boxers were on the road early to visit The Ring Bracknell BC. One of the more recent successful clubs boasting 4 European Gold Medallists in there team of top class talented boxers. Sparring started at 11am, with over 70 boxers in total taking part - the Monkstown boys training until 3pm. Another Brilliant days training.

On Sunday 22nd Jan - the boxers were back in Repton BC at 10am for their last training session of the weekend. Again another very successful days training for the Monkstown Boys.     This training camp will put all the Monkstown Boxers in good stead for the upcoming Dublin and All-Ireland Championships.

We have been nominated for Ireland's best club of 2016 by the IABA (Irish Athletic Boxing Assoc) after we successfully won TEN All Ireland Championships in 2016. This will be a hard feat to follow in 2017 - but we have started the correct way with this training camp, so fingers crossed we can do same again if not better.

Monkstown Dublin BC vs Moss Side Manchester BC

Read Now

Monkstown Boxing Club held a very successful boxing show against their English counterparts Moss Side Manchester BC last Saturday 10th December in their home at The Mounttown Community Facility, Fitzgerald Park.

The Moss Side Manchester Boxing Club (very similar to Monkstown BC) was originally set up by a group of Firemen from the Gang Crime ravaged area, they opened up a disused part of the Fire Station as a boxing club and now the club boasts lots of young members & volunteer coaches. This trip to Dublin was an exercise for the boxers to showcase their talent and build relationships with an Irish Club.

Head Coach at the club is Firefighter and part time Actor Nigel Travis, who has starred in the hit TV series Peaky Blinders and brief showing in Coronation Street. Along with his Father Kelvin Travis - who has coached English & GB teams at major competitions including World Championships and Olympic Games. Kelvin was very impressed with the standard of the Monkstown boys.

Monkstown intend on a return show in Manchester in May.

Monkstown Boxing Club’s 15 boxers, coaches & officials returned home this morning from a fantastic boxing trip to New York.

On Friday 7th October they boxed against a New York State Selection in Gleason’s Gym, after 13 hard fought bouts Monkstown BC came out on top winning the overall matchup by 7-6, a phenomenal achievement. Unfortunately for one of the Monkstown girls who was due to compete – she injured her hand in the week leading up to the trip, also we had 10 year old Girl Iman Edris compete in a skills exhibition bout (no decision). Results of the boxing show below.
On Sunday 9th we were back in Gleason’s Gym – this time for training & sparring. Our 2 senior boys Niall O’Connor (age 20) and Kenneth Doyle (age 17) got to spar 5 rounds with Professional World Champion Contender Leon Moore (record W32 L3), a really brilliant experience for our 2 up and coming champions. Leon’s legendary coach Darius Forde was very impressed with both boys and commented that both have big future’s in Boxing, he would be very interested in training them both if either ever decided to head stateside.
On Monday 10th we took the boxers to Woodside Boxing Academy, Queens, New York. Here they got to train & spar with some locals. Again gym owner Alex Serna who was at the boxing show in Gleason’s on Friday was very impressed with the standard of all our boxers. He was in shock when we reminded him that we have another 30 boxers at home who could of made the trip.
On the days away from training the team took in many of the sites of New York – including a Boat trip to Staten Island, attending an open air concert in Times Square featuring Alicia Keys, Twin Tower memorial, Grand Central Station, Madison Square Garden, shopping at Woodbury Common outlets, Central Park, Chelsea Piers and many more.
Team manager Tony Brien had this to say about the trip: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our boxers, with many of them travelling to America for the very first time.
“The boxing was briliant with all the boxers giving their all in the ring and coming away with a top class win against really good American kids. Outside the ring the kids were impecably behaved, they all had great fun.”
