Monkstown Boxing Club hosted its 5th Annual Boxing Event “Monkstown International Box Cup 2017” in DLR Loughlinstown Leisure Centre from Thursday 29th June to Sunday 2nd July 2017. The registration went very well as expected with over 700 boxers from 163 different clubs from 11 different Countries. The make up of the Countries can be seen below. The standard of the boxing was phenomenal, with many oversees clubs calling it the mini world championships. Many of these Boys & Girls will go onto represent their individual countries in upcoming major international boxing events.

Country/Clubs
Ireland x 97
England x 48
USA x 4
Wales x 4
Scotland x 3
Mongolia x 1
Denmark x 2
Belgium x 1
Norway x 1
Sweden x 1
Hungary x 1
Total 163

The organising committee decided to move from its previous venue in Sallynoggin to a bigger venue where they could fit five boxing rings in DLR Leisure Centre, Loughlinstown – this proved to be a huge hit, with plenty of space for the 5 rings, warm up areas, comfortable seating, athlete’s village and café.

The Box Cup Committee estimate we had over 2000 spectators per day visit the boxing event. We were delighted to see many of our local politicians & recently announced An Cathaoirleach Tom Murphy attend. Also in attendance on Finals day to hand out Champions Medals & Awards was Pat Ryan (President of the IABA).

Among the teams were 3 Female Champions from the highly acclaimed & very successful Mongolian Boxing Federation. All 3 female boxers won their Semi Finals bouts on Saturday & final bouts on Sunday, and were declared Champions. Also among the teams were 4 boxing teams from America – they had travelled from California, Oklahoma, Las Vegas & Texas – all their boxers were ranked No1 in the USA for their age & weigh class.

The American Clubs & Mongolian delegation arrived in Ireland on Monday 26th June and trained/sparred with Monkstown BC locals at the Monkstown Boxing Club in Mounttown Community Facility, Fitzgerald Park in preparation for the Box Cup.

It was amazing to see Dun Laoghaire & surrounding areas packed out with all these boys & girls in their Boxing Club Tracksuits. Every Hotel/B&B/Guesthouse were booked out for the weekend, all the local restaurants/bars had an real upsurge in customers from the boxing event.

A special mention must go to Scottish boxer Lee Welsh (Jones BC, Sterling, Scotland) who only last year was cleared of cancer and allowed back in the ring to compete. He had 3 very good bouts over the weekend and won all 3 to become Monkstown Box Cup Champion.

The organising committee (all local volunteers) who worked tiresly preparing & planning the event want to sincerely thank everyone who helped out at the event and in particular:
Monkstown BC army of Volunteers
The Referee & Judge Supervisors/Officials
The staff at DLR Loughstown Leisure Centre
Our sponsors & supporters: Globalmedics.com, DLRCC (Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council), IABA (Irish Athletic Boxing Assoc.), DLR Leisure Services, The Lough Inn, Ballybrack Waste, St. Josephs Boys BC, and Ergo Boxing.

Awards were handed out at the end of finals day on Sunday for the following:
Best Boxer Award: Demler Zamora (Pound 4 Pound BC, Las Vegas, USA)

Best Junior Boxer: Haaver Ali Tazeem (Prospect ABC, Derby, England)

Tommy Rapple Volunteer Award

Read Now

Congratulations to Monkstown BC Chairman Tommy Rapple who was chosen for an award of "Long serving volunteer to Community" by DLRCC An Cathaoirleach Cormac Devlin.

Please explain why you feel the nominee deserves this award.
Tommy Rapple deserves this award. He originally set Monkstown Boxing Club up to help kids from getting into trouble (constant thought of others) around the Mounttown Flats/Fitzgerald Park area.

He has helped grow the club from its humble beginnings in a disused Flat to one of Irelands top boxing clubs, producing County & National Champions year on year.

His constant joking style of coaching and enthusiasm for boxing make nights in the boxing club more enjoyable, engaging and fun – while still challenging his boxers & coaches to learn. His committee meetings are informality with a real professionalism, always encouraging committee members & coaches to ask questions and become immersed in the club.

There is rarely a night that Tommy is not in the club and we are so grateful to him for generously sharing his time, knowledge and experience. We feel he is a fantastic chairman & boxing coach but more importantly we feel his coaching on life-skills to all our boxers is so important and greatly appreciated by all our members.

Tommy leaves a lasting impression on every boxer he meets, whether they’ve been coached by him or not. He really is an extraordinary, kind and caring man. All at the boxing club & local community are so lucky to have him involved, and long may he continue his excellent work.

Monkstown's Probation Boxer - Joins Irish Army

Read Now

One of Monkstown Boxing Club greatest achievements inside or outside the ring. We are absolutely delighted with this news......

Jack Carroll came to Monkstown Boxing Club through our partnership with Dun Laoghaire Tivoli Training Centre. Both the Probation Service and James Doyle (Monkstown Development Coach) developed a Boxing Course for the Probation Service in 2010 and since then the program has gone from strength to strength and Jack is proof that this program works.

When Jack first arrived in Monkstown BC for boxing training with the rest of the group from the Tivoli training centre his fitness along with his motivation was very low but after a couple of sessions Jack started to really enjoy the training and the discipline that boxing brings. He then told James he was really interested in getting fitter and fitter and maybe one day would like to compete for Monkstown boxing club.

After 18 months of training with Monkstown BC along with a few bumps and setbacks along the way he weighed into the Dublin Men’s Novice Boxing Championships (over 18 year olds with less than 5 bouts) in the National Stadium, South Circular Road - where he picked up a gold medal, shortly after the Dublin championships Jack went on to win the Leinster title.

After Jacks achievements in the ring and a couple of years with the Tivoli training centre, Jack started to think about his next step in life, he was encouraged by the staff from the Tivoli training centre along with James and the boxing club - he then started to think about joining the Army.

James then put him in contact with Andrew Brennan who is Monkstown BC's Strength and Conditioning Coach and also an Irish Army Sargent, after hearing the ins and outs of the process Jack applied on line with the backing that Andrew would "advise" him in any way he could.

On Wednesday 15th February and after months of gruelling training Jack is now a fully professional soldier and Jack Carroll from Tivoli training centre/Monkstown boxing club has now became Private Carroll of the 27th Infantry Battalion.

Jack is a great example to any young person that's referred to Tivoli training centre or any young probation/learning centres in Ireland that if you work hard enough you can turn your life around and achieve great things.

Well done Jack - we are absolutely delighted for you!

Monkstown BC complete tough Training Camp in London

Monkstown Boxing Club's 25 boxers (aged from 9 to 17) returned on the last flight out of London on Sunday night 22nd January 2017. The boxers completed a team building & training camp for up coming Dublin and All Ireland Championships.

On Friday 20th Jan - the boxers arrived in London at 10am and did a light running session around their base in Stratford London. At 3pm they headed to Bethnal Green to visit the famous Repton BC Club. Long been regarded as the best club in England - churning out champion after champion year on year. They successfully re-wrote their own record in 2015 by coaching 13 English Schoolboy Champions. Monkstown BC arrived there at 4pm and after six hours of really competitive training/sparring, the Monkstown boys headed for home.

On Saturday 21st Jan - the boxers were on the road early to visit The Ring Bracknell BC. One of the more recent successful clubs boasting 4 European Gold Medallists in there team of top class talented boxers. Sparring started at 11am, with over 70 boxers in total taking part - the Monkstown boys training until 3pm. Another Brilliant days training.

On Sunday 22nd Jan - the boxers were back in Repton BC at 10am for their last training session of the weekend. Again another very successful days training for the Monkstown Boys.     This training camp will put all the Monkstown Boxers in good stead for the upcoming Dublin and All-Ireland Championships.

We have been nominated for Ireland's best club of 2016 by the IABA (Irish Athletic Boxing Assoc) after we successfully won TEN All Ireland Championships in 2016. This will be a hard feat to follow in 2017 - but we have started the correct way with this training camp, so fingers crossed we can do same again if not better.
